This year’s Valentine’s Day contest asked for the valentine you’d send to The One Who Got Away. Our winner is J. who sent in the following, pithy, entry:

“My mom said to me:
Say something nice, or don’t say
Anything at all.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Dumbass.”

Single’s Awareness Day Contest

Friday, February 7th, 2014

Valentine’s Day (or, as Ben has taken to calling it, ‘Half-Priced Chocolate Eve’) is fast approaching. Which means it’s time for our Annual Singles Awareness Day contest!

If you could send a valentine to any fictional character, who would it be? And why? (Or: what would it say?)

Send your answer to:  contestATbakkaphoenixbooksDOTcom.  At stake is a box of truly spectacular chocolates from Soma*. We’ll post the winner on February 14th. Enter as many times as you like. And good luck!

*Soma is a marvelous place, with taps that run ‘milk’ and ‘dark’ as well as ‘hot’ and ‘cold’, but it is not nut-free. If you have a serious nut allergy, this contest is not for you.

WRITERS TAKE NOTE

Thursday, February 6th, 2014

The Friends of the Merril Collection is currently running its 3rd annual Speculative Fiction Short Story Contest. The contest is open to all writers, whether local or international; multi-published or just starting out. Entry is only $5, and there’s some real prize money up for grabs (the prize for first place is $500. Yowsa!).

Entries will be judged by a panel of editors, authors and other notables in the Canadian SFF field. The reading period ends February 15th 2014. If you have a story of 5000 words or less, this could be the contest for you.

The Nefarious Bed And Breakfast

Wednesday, October 16th, 2013

“Dr. Nefarious, renowned supervillan, has retired to open a bed & breakfast with his invisible wife, his henchman Half-Ape, and high hopes that he can begin his life anew. But what happens when all his guests are leading double lives — including a pair of superheroes who are certain there’s something evil behind the sconces?”

That, my friends, sounds like an awesome premise for a play, right? In fact, Monkeyman Productions is staging it, and we have a pair of tickets to give away for a preview performance on October 25th or 26th.

Send an email to contest-at-bakkaphoenixbooks-dot-com with your contact info AND your superhero name (c’mon, we know you have one). We’ll choose a winner on Tuesday October 22nd.

A TURN OF LIGHT

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

ETA:  This contest is now closed.  Thanks for playing, and don’t miss the official launch of A TURN OF LIGHT, here at the store on Saturday March 9th at 3pm.

This is it:  your last chance to win an ARC of A TURN OF LIGHT by Julie E. Czerneda. This week’s contest is a little trickier, because there’s more than one right answer.

A TURN OF LIGHT won’t be the first fantasy Julie has written, just the biggest.  Name one other work of fantasy fiction written by Julie E. Czerneda

Send your response to: contest(at)bakkaphoenixbooks(dot)com.  Be the first to respond and win!
