Authors For Indies Day

Monday, April 24th, 2017

This Saturday, we’re getting a whole pile of new booksellers! Well, kind of.

April 29th is Authors for Indies Day across Canada, where Canadian authors roll up their sleeves and show their support for independent bookstores by coming in to recommend their own favourite books!

We’ll be hosting a star-studded lineup of authors and editors, including:

Young adult author Kate Blair, whose  first novel, Transferral, has been shortlisted for Saskatchewan’s Snow Willow Award and Manitoba’s Young Readers’ Choice Award and optioned by Temple Street Productions, makers of Orphan Black. Her second science fiction YA novel is due out in September. – 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Young adult author Megan Crewe, whose fantasy, science fiction, and horror novels have been nominated for the Sunburst Award, the White Pine Award, and made the International Literacy Association Young Adults’ Choices and OLA Best Bets Lists. Her latest novel, A Mortal Song, follows a mortal changeling through a war between ghosts and Japanese kami—and her own struggle to find her place. – 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Lambda Award finalist Kristyn Dunnion‘s short work has appeared in SubTerrain Magazine, Cosmonauts Avenue, The Tahoma Literary Review and The New Guard V. She is the 2015 Machigonne Fiction Prize winner and a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her post-apocalyptic novel, Tarry This Night, will be out Fall 2017 from Arsenal Pulp Press. – 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Multi-award-winning literary horror author and critic Gemma Files, whose latest novel, Experimental Film, won both the 2016 Sunburst Award and 2016 Shirley Jackson Award. – 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Author, editor, and books industry buyer Claire Humphrey, whose short fiction has appeared in Strange Horizons, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Apex, Crossed Genres, Fantasy Magazine, and Podcastle—and whose first novel, Spells of Blood and Kin, evokes an atmospheric paranormal Toronto. – 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Author, poet, essayist, and editor Dominik Parisien‘s work has appeared in Strange Horizons, Uncanny Magazine, Exile: The Literary Quarterly, and Shock Totem, and he is the editor of The Starlit Wood and Clockwork Canada, an anthology of Canadian Steampunk. – 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Multi-award-winning writer and illustrator Kevin Sylvester, best known for his Neil Flambé books, has made his first foray into science fiction with Minrs and Minrs2, a breath-held space colony adventure series for middle-grade readers. – 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

Come on by, grab a snack, and take the chance to celebrate independent bookstores—and chat with a great crew of authors about the books you and they love.

Goodbye & Gods Bless

Friday, April 7th, 2017

Lorna Toolis, the Head of the Merril Collection (the largest public library collection of SFF on the continent) retires today.

When a customer would say, “I’m looking for a book I read when I was a kid: it was blue and they could breathe underwater…”, we called Lorna.

When someone asked for more “…by that author who wrote the story in that anthology, can’t remember what it was called but it had a quilt on the cover? From the 90s, I think?”, we called Lorna.

And she could always, always, help.

Smart, funny, kind, possessing both a bottomless resevoir of encyclopedic genre knowledge and the adamantine spine required of librarians working in downtown Toronto, Lorna has been our friend (and savior) for decades.

We’re so happy for her, and wish her all the best in her new adventures.
